Side by Side
On May 11, the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, the oldest conservatoire in the Netherlands, organises an exceptional concert in The Hague in cooperation with renowned conductor Philippe Herreweghe and the Orchestra of the 18th Century.
This fifth joint project with the Orchestra of the 18th Century is devoted to Beethoven. Precisely 30 years ago this orchestra astonished the world with a sublime and new-sounding performance of the Eroica symphony. Conductor Philippe Herreweghe has a similar track record in terms of performing 19th-century music with historical instruments. The two make a perfect match for this programme!
Young, talented students will perform 3 masterpieces by Beethoven, sitting side by side at the music stand with professionals from the Orchestra of the 18th Century. This concert is invaluable for the development of the students. They get to work with Early Music specialist Philippe Herreweghe and share experiences with their peers from a world-renowned orchestra.
The Royal Conservatoire and The Orchestra of the 18th Century are true entrepreneurs with this initiative, as costly projects such as these are not part of the regular offering in the arts and education sector. Both institutes seek to continually renew and improve themselves and show leadership within their field.
With this powerful alignment, they are also making themselves vulnerable. Conductor Philippe Herreweghe will perform a historic masterpiece with exceptionally talented but young, unknown and developing musicians, which takes courage.
